Marcel Fournier and Denis Badin-Defforey opened the first Carrefour supermarket at the crossroads of Avenue Parmelan and Avenue André Theuriet in Annecy in June 1960. Just three years later and inspired by the United States hypermarket model, Carrefour opened the first of its kind hypermarket in France and offered a vast range of products at low prices.

In 1998, Carrefour acquired the French supermarket chain “Comptoir Modernes”, which then operated more than 800 stores. In 1999, Carrefour merged with retailer “Promodès” (which had more than 6,000 stores in Europe). These major acquisitions secured a leading position for Carrefour in the European retail industry early on.
In 2000, and as e-commerce was at its infancy, Carrefour launched its on-line supermarket. In the following years, the company bolstered its positions in numerous countries through a series of targeted acquisitions in France, Romania, Belgium, Poland, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, and Spain. In 2014, Carrefour expanded the scope of its operations with the foundation of “Carmila” – a company specialized in managing the company’s owned shopping centers adjoining hypermarkets.
Carrefour typically pays its stockholders a yearly dividend with a cash payout taking place around June every year. At the time of writing, the last dividend issued by Carrefour was on June 7, 2022 at 52¢ per share.
